Here's a little update on the gigantic (36"X48") commissioned piece I've been working on for the grand reopening of the
Wintergreen Arts Center. You've seen it leaning up against all manner of things in the background of recent posts, so I thought you might like a clearer view.

All the furniture and other bits (curtains, paintings, cats, flowers, etc.) are loose pieces that can be endlessly rearranged by the little artists who visit the center.

I'm still working on the family--actually there will be two sets of peeps, one with lighter skin and one with darker skin--and the mice that will live in the underground hidey-hole, with access through the dining area.

I just realized one of the dining chairs was upside down when I photographed the piece. Doh!

I think my favorite part is the stove and refrigerator--wonder if I can have these custom made (in metal instead of felt) for my dream kitchen some day.

Whew. The board got picked up this morning by the goddess of all things community arts, my good friend
Lara, and I wasn't sure if I was sad or happy to see it go!

I've been patiently waiting to see this finished and it was worth the wait. I wish I could come play with it - what fun! :D
ps - your moleskines are so cute. We are making moleskines for teacher gifts this year (but probably just covering them with fabric or stamping on them) and I cannot wait to get started!
Another lovely creation. It was my daughters 4th birthday today and we made her dolls house. She saw the pics on your post and wanted to know if it was her house :)
That is simply awesome! The wee ones will love it I'm sure. I made my niece something similar for Christmas one year, but it was not mounted on canvas (and shamefully made from poly felt). I based it on a bedtime story my sister made up for her. It was loads of fun to make.
That is so fantastic! The kids are going to have and amazing time with that, they are all very lucky. You are such a great artist, congrats!
HOLY FRICK!!! i am moving in to that one :-)
I'm simply amazed. :o)
Oh, how I love that! Like those felt books for small children, my mama made when I was a child (she even was a theacher in a eveningschool for this issue). Felt is such an incredibly beautifull material, I'd say one of my favourites- but maybe I'd say that of every other natural material too...
holy cow!!! i'm deeply impressed by this, that's soooo lovely, and so detailed! I adore those littli-bitly things and tiny furnishings... and the one I like best is the mouse-hole. I definitely need such a thing for my folks :)
That really is a wonderful piece, there. I adore felt. It must have been a fun project to work on too!
Are you making more to sell? I think this is a great idea and I'd rather buy one than make one.
Thanks

Christa--this would be strictly a special-order item, as time consuming and materials consuming as it is. The one I made for Wintergreen is HUGE and kind of expensive b/c of the size, but I'd be willing to make a smaller version and could do so more inexpensively. Why don't you email me, and maybe we could set something up? Thanks for your interest!
I'd love to make one, but I'd need a pattern. Any plans to make a pattern available? (plleeaasssee?)
I just linked to this awesome felt board house. My three year old son saw it last night with me and wants one. It is amazing. You are truly talented.

onehappygirl--I would be absolutely willing to do a pattern, but let me tell you, this is no small task, especially at this size. Let me ask you a question--if you were going to buy a wool-felt dollhouse felt-board pattern, would you want one slightly smaller than the 36X48"?
Melissa, thanks for your reply. I would be interested in the size you mentioned, or any size actually. I'd mount it on my grand-daughter's playroom wall. How can I send you my email address so that we can talk about details, such as the price?
My email address (which is also at the right side of my blog if you ever need it again) is melissa.crowe@umpi.edu. Email me there!
This dollhouse was featured on Furious Shirley! I love it!!
Melissa, the doll house you made is so adorable! You inspired me and I decided to try to make one for my daughter's 2nd B-day, smaller, of course:-). I have been wondering how you keep the furniture pieces on when the house stands? You mentioned that they are all loose, but how come they don't fall when up-right? I'd be thankful for an insight:-)Good luck with your next creations!
Felt adheres pretty well to felt, so I'm mainly relying on that, but they can sometimes fall down. You can mount the canvas at a bit of a slant to help them stick--and you can also get a "repositionable" glue spray from Elmers if you want to go in that direction, but I'd check the child safety.
