Pretty Bird (or "Why I Felt Like a Good Mother Yesterday")

Lots of days, Annabelle's "art class" is entirely self-directed. While she was in the midst of this project yesterday, my husband said a lovely thing to me.
He called me into the kitchen and whispered, "You've been such a good influence on her. She thinks she can do anything." And you know what? She kind of can.

What a wonderful thing for your husband to say, but also what a wonderful thing for your child (any child) to think and feel! Wouldn't it be wonderful if adults could sustain that feeling of being able to do anything? Who says we can't!

Oh that is such a nice thing to have someone tell you. It is amazing how much children pick up from their mothers.

Lovely words, well deserved.
Isn't it a delight to hear someone's sweet thoughts about our good deeds and accomplishments?

there is nothing more sincere to me than the honest voice of my husband. all he has to say is, "well done", or something equally as simple, and i'm blushing. you man is much more articulate than mine. :-)
you deserve that comment. well. done.

I hope to create the same type experiences for my very-new daughter! Sometime I'd like to hear more about how your did birthdays for Annabelle without gifts.
:-)

I know you will, Darcy! And as for those birthdays, the simplest answer is that I just said "no presents, please--no, really, please." The more detailed answer is that we always did activity parties--gatherings with friends that were based on some active outing. Once we did a swimming and rock climbing party at the gym; once we did a party at one of those massive warehouses full of inflated slides and jumping houses; we've done picnics at the park and trips to the children's museum, and we simply created no time or place for gift giving. My one secret is that I've always spent kind of a lot of money on the gift bags, so Annabelle was getting a little bag of really-good goodies, but so was every guest at the party. They're a BIG hit!

Thanks, that helps! It sounds like we have had some of the same thoughts - just talking about asking people to give family memberships (or money towards) places like the zoo, aquarium or children's museum.
