Embroidereads

So here's the thing: I'm a writer--a poet. Have been since I could speak, basically. Before I could read, I drew pictures in a succession of panels, comic style, and made all and sundry listen to me narrate the story I'd sketched out. Since all-things-textile turned my head about three years ago, I must admit to picking up the pen far, far less. And really, that's been okay. The most important element in my happiness is creativity, and the other most important element is movement--learning new skills, achieving new goals. I did that as a writer for more than a decade, and more recently, I've been doing it as an artist.
I can't manage to put down the needle--it's just not going to happen anytime soon, folks--but I'm starting, again, to long for the words, so I've decided to embroider some lines from my recent poems, and what a satisfying combo that has turned out to be. I happily committed these lines to some gorgeous white organic cotton last night while Mark watched Memento. I can see a new evening habit forming...

Beautiful.... I love your words and having them embroidered is lovely. (I'm a writer - a poet - too - check out my blog...)

What a fantastic idea! I've been a high school English teacher for 12 years and have this intense creative desire, but am searching for an outlet. I've been reading your blog for awhile and I'm so impressed. I can't wait to see more.

Oh, man, Audra--you're fighting the good fight! ;-) It's definitely time to try your hand at poem embroidery, right?!

I have so many quote and phrases that I'd love to embroider. You make it look like it is easy, though I'm guessing it isn't!

Jenny--actually, I don't think there's anything particularly difficult about it--I drawn the quote directly onto the fabric (but Corinne over at So September has a tute for transferring computer text if you prefer...), and then I just use a backstitch to fill it in. Easy!

I don't remember how i originally came across your blog, but i was looking through my favorites today and saw it saved there. i am a rising senior in high school, and after reading your background info i was excited because english is my absolute favorite subject. no matter where i end up after college, i hope an engish major will have lead me there. i also adore sewing and fabric in general, so i was inspired by all the projects on your site, especially this embroidered poem. i know i will continue to refer to your blog in the future for motivation. thanks!

p.s. sorry if this comment seems strange, but i thought you might appreciate knowing <:)

Not strange at all! I love that you let me know we share so many interests, and I want you to know that I have _never_ regretting my studies in English, even for a second. Did you know I'm having a poetry/embroidery contest?

kim1molly said...

yes, i read about the contest and i love the idea! however, i was apprehensive to participate because i've never embroidered anything i've made and i don't even have a hoop. but i suppose this is the perfect time to begin...

i think i'll give it a try.

Hi Melissa! I live in kennebunk and i was wondering if you could embroider a verse (line?) from a poem for me for my honey? Do you make/sell personalized embroidery? I am flexible. Thanks!
Chris (I emailed you too)
