Sometimes, no matter what else I'm supposed to be doing (and there's always something, right?), I carve out a few hours to sit at my work table and play. There's just no other way to ensure that new ideas will come. If the muse arrives, my dear, and you are in the basement putting in a load of whites, well, she goes her merry way, and when you crawl up those cellar stairs again, just a hint of her perfume lingers. It smells like apples--
no, lilac,
no--. Gone.

Well, I'm not falling into that sad trap.
Uh-uh. Now who's gonna clean up all these teensy scraps?

Ooo I love the look of this one!
I think I'm in love with that hoopful. Gorgeous.
I love this! Your Muse is quite generous :D
The colours remind me of the ocean and seaweed and kelp. And bubbles.
Leave the scraps and keep playing!
Oooo - this is so inspiring! I love the colors and shapes.
:)
ok - that does it. i'm moving in with you and copying every craft move you make.
you need to write a book you know that - don't you?
I love your colors...and the shapes...I love the whole thing!
(I think I have the exact same vintage table!)
Oh you are exactly right !!! what a great description.
Hear, hear! Three cheers for playing! See what gorgeousness comes from it? Good on ya' for listening to your Muse.
i think "sea" and yet i think of succulents. beautiful and WAY more important than laundry.
Beautiful! Truly. The first question that comes to mind is (and this is a lame question, but I really do want to know the answer) what scissors do you recommend to do such fine, detailed work with felt and how often do you get them sharpened?
Thanks, everybody--I'm having a LOT of fun with this one.
And Audra--that's a good question! I use Gingher scissors, both the regular, general scissors and the embroidery scissors for really tight spots, and I have to confess to never having had them sharpened. I do, however, have to oil and clean them quite frequently because the felt dust mucks 'em up.
Oh my goodness!!! I LOVE this so, so much! I mean I really LOVE it! It made me gasp when I saw it. You keep on listening to that muse :)

Why, thanks, Manda, my dear!
Finish it up and put it in your shop, its adorable and lovely!!
Do you really cut all those circles by hand? Gack! Mine never come out looking so perfectly circular, even when I trace a template! Any secrets to share? Please? Pretty please with chocolate on top? :)
Seriously crushing on your work, and I just finished making up two dollhouse felt boards based on your design in Living Craft magazine... it was so much fun! I made them into playmats instead of on an artist canvas, you can see how they turned out here: http://kidsbyhand.wordpress.com/2010/09/29/christmas-is-coming/
They are for my nieces, but my daughter loves them so much I'm going to have to make her one too.
Joyful--that's wonderful! I love the idea of the take-along mat. I hope you don't mind--I linked to your post on the Living Crafts FB page, so others can see what you did.
And yes--I cut those circles by hand. I guess it's my one super power. ;-)
Amazing what you can do!
my favorite is running up the stairs with intent and purpose, anxious to start on my great idea or get to the task at hand. upon my arrival, there i stand, perplexed, at a dead stop, wondering why on earth i came upstairs. something about those 14 steps makes me lose my mind--and my muse.
love your new creation. very funky.
Nancy--YES! That happens to me all the time. Maybe we need to start carrying little tape recorders, so we can make note of those good ideas mid-laundry. ;-)
