Who, Me? A Day to Myself?

Yes, I'm already back to work--preparing for a wee post-Christmas shop update.
We had a bit of glorious sun this morning, after our two-day blizzard, and I soaked it all up with my camera and spent the day editing pictures and tidying my house and drinking chai and listening to This American Life, whilst my girl was off sledding with a friend.
Can I say this day was almost my best Christmas present? (I say almost because of the two thrifted vintage cross-stitch portraits of pipe-smoking fishermen my husband gave me--wait till you see them. I didn't know the world held so much awesome.)
Lovely.

Chai, Ira Glass, and a quiet house...some of my favorite things, too! Glad you took advantage of your "me" time.

It does sound like an almost perfect day to oneself. I may have said this before but your use of stitches is amazing. So small and delicate. They hold the fabric together at the same time as being so pretty to look at. You also stitch economically, if that makes sense. When I would probably use a running stitch around the entire edge of a piece, you seem to use fewer stitches. It looks wonderful. Okay, enough gushing. But you so make me want to stitch something.

I have been swooning over your work for a long time, and am finally motivated to make a "Little Pink House" for a friend's birthday. Only it will be a "Little Charcoal Grey House with Orange Door". ;)

I have two quesitons:
*Do you use glue to attach the felt pieces before sewing them? I'm wondering about the white trim "strips" around windows, doors, etc.

*What scissors to you use? I know that to work with felt I need to invest in good shears, but there are so many options: 8", 10", knife edge, bent, spring action...Aaccckk! Overwhelming!

Your work is so gorgeous and inspiring!

Hi, Kate, and thanks for your kind words! I'm so glad to hear you're going to try your hand at a house project. (I hope you'll share the results with me when you're done!)

First, I don't usually use any glue; if you want to affix things before sewing, I'd recommend a basic spray glue (applied with a very light touch, to avoid soaking through), like Elmers. If you see a "trim" around a window or door in one of my projects, though, I've most likely sewn down a whole rectangle of white (rather than strips), and then sewn a smaller rectangle of blue directly over the white, creating the illusion of strips. Does that make sense?

Scissors-wise, I always use Ginghers, and I have the regular sewing size (not bend, and a little smaller than shears, I think) plus the knife-edged embroidery scissors for both floss and very small felt pieces.

Hope that helps!

That helps a ton! And yes, your explanation of the trim makes perfect sense.

Thank you so much! If it's not too embarrassing, I'll show you the finished piece. ;)

I know it's been asked before, but where do you buy your felt?

Melissa Crowe said...

Mrs. G--try either Magic Cabin or A Child's Dream Come True (both online) for 100% wool felt.
