This morning, at the other end of my second work surface (a.k.a. "the dining table"), while I sat sewing felt heads to linen canvas, a little girl sat with her math workbook. There are some real challenges to home schooling a twelve-year-old--at least this twelve-year-old (who is wickedly smart and terrifically funny but also stubborn as heck). Some mornings devolve into a battle of the wills before I'm in my street clothes, for instance, but this morning, seeing her there, working quietly and so close by, I felt a rush of love and gratitude (for the girl, for my life) of the kind that will get me through this afternoon's battles.

Battening the (Emotional) Hatches

So studious! I love seeing that! :-) Just stopped to say hi! You're a neighbor blog to mine...Hi! :-)
That's a lovely photo, and one I'm sure she'll appreciate one day.
That's so sweet, though a sight rarely seen around here....if I'm not staring at my daughter doing her work it almost doesn't get done;)
I love those moments. After a trying day I always look at my little ones sleeping and think how is it possible that I battled wills with such little angels. Then they wake up and it happens all over again! lol
My 6 yr old is similar with her homeschooling. She is so smart and creative, it just seems that she thinks there is so much more that she would rather be doing than "crummy reading"!
very inspiring.....i've been working on pulling my oldest out of the school system and next year just might be the year! fingers crossed....
Thanks, ladies. And good luck elliemoon--feel free to email me if you want to chat about the decision.
I homeschooled my son while sailing... challenges to be sure! I love the way that sunflower acts like a crown on her head!
such a pretty one, that miss A. and twelve!
oh, we DO have to savor those moments, don't we? I battle daily before I'm in my street clothes, with at least ONE of them. Tate is like a badger when he digs in his heels... all fight and terror and no reason at all. and Cal too smart for his own good for he is ENDLESS reason, but all his own. Ellerie mimics them both in turn and is a screamer with a tendency to go boneless on me.
AH, you've just reminded me why I DON'T homeschool ;-)
Well, that certainly wasn't my intention! But I can tell you, I cannot imagine home-schooling three of the buggers. ;-) (I LOVE the image of Ellerie going "boneless," btw.)
