These Goats Are No Joke

No--they're very serious. They're for the the-a-ter.
In a break from portraiting, I've been solemnly (ahem) crafting three goat costumes for Annabelle's upcoming production of a "fractured fairy tale" version of "Three Billy Goats Gruff," in which she plays a cranky teenaged, yes, goat.
In case you're itching to have a goat hat of your own, though, for less lofty purposes (greeting your husband at the door? frightening the neighbor kids? eating grass?), here are some of the making details:

The hat and ears are made from this gorgeous organic sherpa--soft and furry and all-around dreamy. (Hey, Dory!) I cut two ear-shaped layers of sherpa and sewd them together right-sides facing and turned out. I made the hat using this tutorial, though I obviously omitted the drawstring/ribbon detail. I got horn advice from the genius of all-things-softie-pattern (Hey, Abby!) and drew a curved horn shape on brown wool felt, put this "pattern" over another piece of felt, followed the pencil line with my sewing-machine needle, cut around the shape, turned it out (the hardest part--I've got to invest in a hemostat!), and stuffed it. In the end, I just machine sewed all the parts onto the hat as best I could. (Picture me jamming layers of fluff under the presser foot and praying for the best.)

I kind of love the end result--and I only have to make two more!

Baaaa-youtiful goat, er kid, er... sorry I just can't seem to help myself. Let us know how the play goes, it sounds like it might be a bit of a riot. :-) Thanks for the nod! xo

I am thinking I need one for running into the post office, or the bank even. Thanks for the giggle. Really cool hat...

uhmmmm, why does your baby suddenly look a lot like a...teenager! Gasp! I know she's just twelve but she looks so grown up :-)

Darcy--RIGHT? Sheesh.

You are so insanely talented! I love the hat! I hope your girl realizes how lucky she is to have a mom that makes that instead of one who just glues cardboard horns on a ball cap (me).

Nice! This makes me wish that at the high school level there were still really dedicated room moms who wanted to know what they could do to help. I wold task one with making me a bunch of these hats so the next time we act out "The Odyssey" in English One Polyphemus' goats can look legit.

You ARE going to treat us to at least a snippet of Miss A's play on your blog, yes?

I'm not sure "legit" is the word I'd use to describe this hats...but thanks! :-)

If I can figure it out, I'll show you a bit of video.

Great goat hats- I bet the production will be lots of fun. I think I could use a hat like that when I am in a bad mood- no-one would messw with me with a pair of horns lol

That hat is too cute for words. And it looks like your teenager still has her sense of humor! So many of my friends' kids seem to have given theirs up in the name of coolness. What a great project!
